Tips on public speaking - the powerful rule of three

By Tim Ross · Thursday, August 11th, 2011 · No Comments »

In all the rhetorical devices available to a public speaker the most
powerful is the rule of three. There is something within our mental
makeup that reacts to words or phrases in groups of three. It is so
powerful that it works with the written word as well as the spoken
one. A successful public speech will almost always contain at least
one such group. So what is the rule of three?

Tips on public speaking - the use of humour

By Tim Ross · Tuesday, August 9th, 2011 · No Comments »

Humour in a public speech can be the oil that lubricates the themes,
the spark that turns dull prose into an entertainment or the grinding
metal of a car crash. In other words it can contribute to a great
speech or it can be the death knell of your oratorical hopes.
Fortunately there are some tips that you can follow that will enhance
your chances of giving your audience a pleasant experience and reduce
the risks of embarrassing both you and them.

Tips on public speaking - Vocal delivery

By Tim Ross · Monday, June 6th, 2011 · No Comments »

In a previous blog I have detailed the importance of the visual aspects
of your delivery. Now we should examine the importance of the vocal
delivery. We all like to have an effective voice.

An effective voice is conversational, natural and enthusiastic. It is
pleasant to listen to. A speaker with a well trained effective voice
could read a telephone directory to an audience and make it
interesting. Read the rest of this entry »

Tips on public speaking - visual delivery

By Tim Ross · Friday, May 20th, 2011 · No Comments »

Delivering a successful speech in public requires a variety of skills.
Clearly the content is crucial. No amount of rhetorical fireworks and
stage management will compensate for content that is superficial,
boring or illogical. However, one aspect for the public speaker to
work on is the visual side of the presentation. As a public speaker
your physical appearance, posture, body movements, gestures, facial
expressions and eye contact all influence your audience's perception.

Tips on public speaking - the conclusion

By Tim Ross · Monday, April 18th, 2011 · No Comments »

It is a strange phenomenon that a lot of people can deliver a logical
sequence of arguments in a speech but forget to include a satisfying
conclusion. It is strange because it is known that stories must have a
beginning, middle and an ending. You would think badly of a book that
left all the threads of the story hanging lose on the last page -
unless you are watching a TV soap where such a practice is practically
mandatory.

Despite this obvious requirement for an ending many speakers just stop
after making their final point. This is flawed technique and results
in a poor public speech. Read the rest of this entry »

Tips on public speaking - the middle part of the speech

By Tim Ross · Friday, April 15th, 2011 · No Comments »

In a previous blog I have spoken about the importance of the
introduction. That is crucial. It sets the scene but it does more
than that. It tells the audience about you and you can gauge your
audience. In boxing parlance it is sparring before the fight. You
might even from some early remarks get a gauge for how they feel about
the subject under discussion. Once the sparring is done, however, you
have to deliver the main punches. Perhaps this analogy is too
aggressive. Do not worry about that. Your innate style will determine
how the speech is delivered - not some advice from a distant blog.

Tips on public speaking - why the introduction is crucial.

By Tim Ross · Tuesday, April 5th, 2011 · No Comments »

When drafting your speech every part is important if your audience is
to be entertained, informed or persuaded. However, from your point of
view the introduction is the by far the most important. You should
devote much time and effort to getting this part right. If you start
well your chances of delivering a great speech are enhanced. If you
start badly it is unlikely that you or your audience will recover from
the experience.

The reasons for this are as follows. Read the rest of this entry »

Tips on public speaking - Selecting your topic

By Tim Ross · Thursday, March 31st, 2011 · No Comments »

Some speeches are predetermined by the event in which you are
participating. Typically this would be a conference presentation with
your contribution being a very specific part of the whole. In that
case the choice of topic is made for you and it is likely that you are
speaking because of your expertise in that field. However, the person
who wishes to make a profit at public speaking will choose topics and
market these speeches. In this case therefore the choice of topic is
made by the individual.

How to you make that choice? Here are some tips to narrow it down.

Tips on public speaking - Managing anxiety

By Tim Ross · Friday, March 25th, 2011 · No Comments »

Most public speakers have a degree of anxiety before giving a speech.
A good public speaker will channel that anxiety and use it as a
friend. It can sharpen the mind provided that you do not let the fear
of speaking in public dominate your thinking and paralyse your
actions. Anyone can learn to harness the anxiety and make it work for
you rather than against you. Read the rest of this entry »

Find other ZORGIUM pages using AZ.COM:

Enter your search keyword(s) into the search input field of http://az.com
The zorgium specific results appear in the right hand margin.

Find other ZORGIUM pages using your favorite search engine:

Enter your search keyword(s) and the keyword "zorgium" into the search input field of http://bing.com, http://yahoo.com or http://google.com.

Heads up: There's an ongoing spamdexing of Google searchbot algorithms. Sites that are 'copies of copies' and cloaked sites which include Zorgium keywords presented to search engine crawlers yet garbage content presented to human visitors were hosted on thousands of IP addresses and domains registered immediately after the introduction of Zorgium in November of 2009. The Hostgator/'The Planet'/Softlayer datacenters in Texas seem to be the epicenter of this activity in conjunction with anonymously registered domains of various TLD's but primarily .info domains at Godaddy which, in our opinion, has some sort of connection to the domains of goldmint.in and goldmint.org. Google has begun to notice this and has begun to lower the ranking of these sites and put our original sites back on top of the search rankings. These actions, as far as we can tell, negatively impact the use of the keyword 'zorgium' as a search term and provided little benefit, if any, to the perpetrators.

ZORGIUM note to content providers: If you don't want your page to appear in Zorgium's search abstraction then put an exclusion for "Zorgium" in your web server's robots.txt file.
